Born at the algerian Casbah in 1949. Died 2007.
Sid Ali Melouah is the foremost cartoonist and comics artist of Algeria. He co-founded the first Algerian comics magazine, M'quidech, in 1968. After his graduation from the Academy of Commercial Art in 1975, Melouah started working as a cartoonist, illustrator and journalist for several dailies and weeklies. Since then, he started producing comics for children as well as adults. He has collaborated on several international children's magazines, mostly published in the Middle East. Melouah created the comic book 'Le Grand Trésor' in 1986, in cooperation with the United Nations.
Melouah's most notable work is his work for adults, namely the comic albums 'La Cité Interdite' and 'La Secte des Assassins', both based on Oriental history and legends. For the Algerian Department of the Environment, he created a series of comics about a bemused member of the nomadic Touareg tribe, who was tired of the depressions of modern civilization. As a result of his work as a cartoonist and journalist, Sid Ali Melouah incurred the wrath of Muslim fundamentalists, and he moved to France after several attempts on his life.
