LAVAR MUNROE

BIOGRAPHY

Lavar Munroe was born in Nassau, Bahamas in 1982.

He lives and works between Washington, DC and Nassau, Bahamas.

Lavar Munroe is an interdisciplinary artist whose work encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture, installation art, and a hybrid medium that straddle the line between sculpture and painting.

Munroe earned his BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design (2007). At the 2010 Liverpool Biennale, Munroe represented the Bahamas with a site-specific drawing project. He earned a MFA from Washington University in St. Louis (2013), which was immediately followed by tenure at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2013). Munroe was awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painting and Sculpture Grant (2013). In 2014, Munroe was awarded a Post Doctorial Fellowship at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where he was later recognized with Postdoctoral Award of Research Excellence (2015).

In 2015, Munroe exhibited in the Venice Biennale, in the International Art Exhibition titled All the World’s Futures, curated by the biennale's director, Okwui Enwezor. This was followed by residency invitations at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire (2015) and at the newly constructed Joan Mitchel Center in New Orleans (2015). Munroe executed an ambitious multi-venue solo exhibit 'Journey Elsewhere: Musings from a Boundless Zoo' at the SCAD Museum and Gutstein Gallery (2016).

He has also exhibit institutions such as The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum (St. Louis MO), the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas (Nassau Bahamas), the Nasher Museum of Art (Durham North Carolina), the Contemporary Art Museum of Raleigh, among others. Munroe’s work is represented by Jenkins-Johnson Gallery (SF | NY), Jack Bell Gallery (London), and NOMAD (Brussels | Miami).
